Recognizing Potential

I’ve been thinking a lot about potential lately and how much it can either point us in the right direction or make us feel like there are 100 bricks in a backpack and that we can never let go.  So how can we really take hold of our potential and actually achieve a sliver of it?

I sincerely believe this is important because once we recognize our potential and begin to realize that potential, a funny thingreachout 260x300 Recognizing Potential happens… we begin to see the potential in others.  What others can and ought to do.  Once we have realized our potential and found out the “trick” to doing so, we unconsciously help those around us to do the same.  Sometimes all you need is a helping (invisible) hand from those around us to help “lift us up to where we belong.”  I think this is best done by you and I recognizing potential in others and treating them as if they have already reached that potential.  This, in effect, pulls them up to their potential.

When we treat man as he is, we make him worse than he is; when we treat him as if he already were what he potentially could be, we make him what he should be.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Focus on your potential, not your (or those around you) limitations. The hard part is recognizing that your potential is even greater than where you are currently at and always will be.  But at the same time, being happy with where you’re at so that you can push for greater heights.

How have you done this?

Quote of the Week (February 8, 2010)

“Procrastination is the fear of success. People procrastinate because they are afraid of the success that they know will result if they move ahead now. Because success is heavy, carries a responsibility with it, it is much easier to procrastinate and live on the ’someday I’ll’ philosophy.” – Dennis Waitley

How can you use this to make life better for you today?

A Finish to Remember…

Many who know me know that I’m an avid sports fan.  I consistently follow a few teams on several different levels.  I follow the Brigham Young (BYU) Cougars men’s basketball team as well as football team.  I also follow the Utah Jazz (NBA).  Recently, a guy named Sundiata Gaines was called up from the NBA Development League to play for the Utah Jazz as the Jazz needed to fill a roster spot.  Due to injuries and other circumstances, he played a significant amount in one of the first games he was on the roster.  Having only practiced a handful of times with the Jazz, he wasn’t the best known by the fans or by the players nor did he have the knowledge of Jerry Sloan’s system.  Yet, he found himself in the game, down 2 points with seconds left, against the Cavs and Lebron James, who single handedly took over the game.  Why am I sharing all of this with you?  I want you to watch this video!

Gaines is living his dream.  We see it as happening overnight.  But did it really?  What do you think?  Let me know in the comments!

A New Beginning

marathon race start 300x206 A New BeginningI don’t know how many times I’ve said this on this blog, but I’m getting ready to start this up again and be consistent all the way through now.

I recently read Gary Vaynerchuk’s book Crush It! and (a book review will be coming soon) and absolutely loved it.  If you are wondering how to get started blogging and living your passion in a way so that you can connect to those around you, this is a must read.  He starts out the book with three (3) easy rules to follow.  These are the three rules I would like to follow from here on out.

  1. Love your family.
  2. Work superhard.
  3. Live your passion.

I expect them to come through in that order as well!

Here are a few things that I expect to do on my new blog: interviews with other entrepreneurs, others who are doing what they love, book reviews (personal goal is to read at least one non-fiction book a month), and begin to create a community where those who are looking to find what they love can find inspiration and motivation to continue down the path they’ve started on.  I also hope to share my experiences, successes, failures and struggles going down the same path as you.

I hope you’re following me on this journey.  I hope to talk about businesses that I’m involved in.  The good and the bad.  The struggles and triumphs.  Interview those who I see as already living their passions and how they got there.  I’m VERY excited about the new direction this is going.  I think I’m finally choosing to do what I want to do instead of what I thought I should do with this blog.

What’s holding you back from starting your dreams?
